There are zillions (literally) of Java enterprise applications that are candidates for being repurposed to provide benefit to mobile users. This is first of a multi-part series where we walk through the process of creating a mobile app for one of the most popular Java enterprise (JEE) applications, the Petstore application. We have dubbed the mobile application Mobile-Petstore, and it will provide browsing of the petstore’s catalog of exotic and classic animals. We will build Mobile-Petstore as an HTML5 application for iOS and Android devices. Following is the Petstore web user-interface (top) and a mobile user-interface mockup running on an iPhone5 and a Nexus S Android phone (bottom).
About the Petstore JEE Application
The Petstore application was developed by Sun (now Oracle) and first appeared in 2000 as a demonstration of key Java enterprise technologies and design patterns. (Many of us old enough to remember it will recall those painful days of suffering with EJB1.) It was updated around 2007 to use the latest JavaEE 5 technologies of that time. If you Google for the app, you will find it is no longer supported by Oracle. For this article we are using a new implementation of Petstore named Yet Another Petstore (YAP) from Antonio Gonclaves.
HTML5 Applications – What’s the big deal?
Our plan is to build Mobile-Petstore as an HTML5 application for iOS and Android devices. If you are unfamiliar with HTML5 applications (a.k.a., hybrid apps), they are HTML5 webapps packaged as native apps. When the app is launched on a device such as an iPhone, the app starts up an integrated browser that loads the app’s HTML5 web user interface as if it were native. This simple approach has the benefit of being cross-platform capable (write-once, deploy anywhere) and very affordable to develop because it requires only basic web programming skills.
About Tools and Services
We will be using the latest version of MyEclipse IDE (MyEclipse ver. 2013) for development. MyEclipse 2013 includes cross-platform mobile and HTML5 development tools, which work great with JEE 6 apps like the Petstore. Specifically, we will make heavy use of MyEclipse App Center Builder, a cloud-based service for building native iOS and Android apps.
The user interface will be implemented using the JQuery Mobile HTML5 user interface library and the Knockout.js model-view library (more about this later). Mobile-PetStore will interact with the REST web service implemented by JEE6 PetStore application. The PetStore JEE 6 application is deployed to the Glassfish 3 server using the Apache Derby database for storage. We will say more about the PetStore implementation in a future article.
In Part-2 we will talk about the user experience and outline the REST web service APIs we plan to use.

Spring Cleaning is such a pain in the rear! It’s a timely, incredibly involved process where you discover you have things you never knew you had and things you’re embarrassed to admit that you STILL have! But inevitably it always ends with a sense of complete and utter satisfaction at all the clutter you’ve managed to clear out, everything you were able to organize, and for me is typically is accompanied with vows to NEVER try something like “that” again! Getting your Spring Cleaning done is a refreshing feeling of accomplishment, kind of like the euphoria we are feeling over the release of MyEclipse 2013!
MyEclipse 2013 has undergone some Spring Cleaning as well! We’ve gone through and cleared out some of the clutter, organized it’s capabilities into more user-friendly locations, and enhanced it’s features with mobility. You can view a full list of Delivery Changes in MyEclipse 2013 here.
MyEclipse 2013 is now Clutter-free!
MyEclipse 2013 has been cleared of much of it’s bulk with the removal of the Pulse Team features, the Configuration Center, and the Dashboard. The Pulse Team features, Team Sharing and Team Management options, have been pulled from this release for basic MyEclipse users, thus freeing up more space for some of the other more amazing capabilities of MyEclipse 2013 that you might actually use! For this release and for projected future releases, these functions will only be available in MyEclipse Secure Editions.
If you are needing a way (and many do) to share team profiles and projects or need assistance with license management and tracking, please be sure to check out MyEclipse Secure Edition which is supported by Secure Delivery Center (SDC).
Based on the feedback we’ve received from our users (that’s you!), we’ve lighted MyEclipse with the removal of the Configuration Center and the Dashboard, which by most accounts were not needed in the lesser versions of MyEclipse.
MyEclipse 2013 is now more intuitively organized!
Instead of having 2 separate locations from where you conquer your development world, we’ve simply added them to the Help tab where folks indicated they were looking for them anyway. Now from the Help tab you can Choose Components, Add items from Catalogs or Sites, Check for Updates, and access a wealth of Tips and Tricks. In addition, we’ve spent some time creating Icons to help you pinpoint various features and capabilities.
Circling back to our MyEclipse Secure users, you will notice the absence of the Pulse Catalog. It’s now the MyEclipse Secure Marketplace which offers the same features of Pulse, but enhances them with drag-n-drop technology as well as provides the benefit access to proprietary marketplaces.
We hope you’ll enjoy these improvements we’ve made to MyEclipse 2013. Our goal has always been to figure out the best ways we can aid you in your development processes, while taking some of the pain points associated with development out of those processes. We’re really excited about the changes and hope you’ll enjoy the more user-friendly environment of MyEclipse 2013.

These Forums provide an online catalog of Genuitec Support, where in all likelihood, your question has already been asked and answered, ensuring that you have a plethora of information at your disposal.
The next level of Support Services are our Advanced Service Agreements. For this level of support, you gain access to our Support Forums with priority response times, collaborative web sessions, annual quality and optimization reviews to ensure you’re getting the most out of MyEclipse, and discounts on Custom Support Services. Advanced Service Agreement pricing is based on the number of existing MyEclipse Licenses you employ. A detailed pricing schedule can be found on our Support page.
Our Collaborative Web Sessions are designed to address product specific support or training concerns and connect you with one of our skilled technicians for up to 2 hours. Advanced Service Agreements include a fixed number of support sessions per quarter which can be scheduled within 72-hours of request.
