Preliminary Update (Sat, Sept 14)
We have spent the last 24 hours retesting and analyzing new and regression issues with MobiOne apps and webapps on iOS7 Gold Master (GM) that was released yesterday. Our results are mixed.
Good News
The preliminary assessment is MobiOne generated native apps perform properly on iOS7 devices. We are still running tests and this is only a preliminary status.
Bad News
Webclips and websites are severely affected on iOS7 Mobile Safari. Webclips (webapp launched from homescreen) experience unresolvable issues when accessing telephony (dialing), sms, email, alerts, and appcache (there are more). These issues have been reported to Apple and affect not only MobiOne generated webclips but almost every other product that relies on mobile safari’s webapp features. Websites experience a layout issue resulting from the dynamic full screen mode (e.g., address and button bars visibility varies based on scroll positioning and device orientation which is not detectable by the MobiOne UI layout engine).
We have followed the Mobile Safari issues since the early beta’s with the expectation that Apple would address these widely reported issues by the production release (GM). In a nutshell this is a bummer for us, MobiOne developers that depend upon webclip and website support, and the entire mobile web developer community that has long supported Apple.
Next Steps
Today and tomorrow (Sat/Sun) we are focusing our attention on completing native app testing on iOS7 GM devices. We will provide an update when it is completed and share thoughts on if/how to work with the mobile safari issues.
