I have just installed MyEclipse 4.1 within Eclipse 3.1. The installation is on a Powerbook running OSX 10.4.6.

When I attempt to open the DB Explorer perspective, the Help pane is opened, displaying the correct Help info for the DB Exporer. But the Explorer interface itself does not appear – no browser, no panes, no indication in the toolbar area that the MyEclipse Database Explorer is loaded.

    Thanks for your help,

    Tom

    Tom,
Can you post the content from MyEclipse > About > Configuration Summary for me?

    Riyad,

Here’s the config summary. I have also e-mailed it to you, along with a screen shot. Thanks for your help.

First thing is I would encourage you to upgrade Eclipse, but before we do that, try this tip here:
    http://www.myeclipseide.com/PNphpBB2+file-viewtopic-t-10280.html

If that doesn’t work then try going to File > Switch Workspace, then enter a new workspace dir that doesn’t exist and hit OK. After Eclipse restarts, open the MyEclipse persective, does it look different?

If not, switch back to your old workspace and just open the views individually under Window > Show View.

    Riyad,

Cleaning Eclipse had no effect. (By the way, please note that all the references you provided are specific to Windows, and I’m on a Mac.)

Creating a new, non-existent workspace caused the DB Explorer to display correctly.

So — what do I need to do next? Obviously, I want to keep all the information in my old workspace – projects, tasks, etc.

You can edit the Eclipse package contents and I believe there is still an eclipse.ini file in there you can edit.

So — what do I need to do next? Obviously, I want to keep all the information in my old workspace – projects, tasks, etc.

You said above -clean had no effect, then you made the comment about Windows. I wasn’t sure if you weren’t able to try -clean, or if you did manually try it, didn’t work, and were just pointing out that the tip isn’t helpful for non-windows people.

If you did try it, you can use File > Export > Preferences to export your settings from one workspace, then startup the new workspace and use File > Import > Preferences to pull them back in. Additionally use File > Import > Existing Project to pull your old projects into your new workspace as well.

I’m sorry for the inconvenience, but if a corrupted workspace is not corrected with -clean there isn’t much else to do besides digging down into the .metadata directory and erasing potentially invalid files, but that dir gets so huge hunting through there will take a lot more time than the few minutes reimporting everything into a new workspace.

    Riyad,

Thanks. That’s what I needed to know. My point regarding platform was simply to point out that you need to send Mac users in a different direction. There is no .ini file. You’re correct that you can, and should, open the package contents. The startup params need to be specified within the .plist file. In my case, I modified the .plist file, but I also ran the -clean parameter from the command line, just to be certain. And there was no effect.

As I said, creating a new workspace successfully made the interface appear. But I did not know (as a relatively new Eclipse user) the routines for moving information in one workspace to another. I will follow the Import/Export procedures you’ve described, and that will probably take care of things.

Thanks for your advice. I understand your point about corruption; I just didn’t know to migrate settings and projects.

This should close the issue. But I’ll post again tomorrow, when I’ve had a chance to test, and let you know the results.

    Tom,

Have you ‘MyEclipse database explorer; perspective at all (Windows – Open Perspective – Other ) ?

If yes, just open it and call ‘Reset perspective’

    Best

Perfect. Resetting the perspective did it.

I said I was new to Eclipse, so I didn’t know about the “Reset” choice.

    Thanks for the help.
