One of the requirements of Apple’s Developer Enterprise Program is that you must have a Mac Running IOS Leopard X.

If we have a developer’s licenses, and we still build apps using MobiONE on Windows, without having an Apple computer?

The apps we are developing are internal to our client and not available to the public.

What is the deal with needing an Apple computer to develop apps for Enterprise use only.

    Can anyone help with this?

Clarification, I’m not aware of any other requirements that the following:
The requirement is in order to build an iOS application the tools to accomplish this are only available Mac OSX. MobiOne’s App Center Builder runs on several macs located in our data center and uses the required Apple tools to create iOS apps from your mobione project. By using MobiOne App Center Builder you do not have a need for a Mac to build an ios application.

Note beyond application building, there may additional application and device management services provided by apple that only run on a mac.

OK, that clarifies it. We build in MobiONE, but use your Mac’s to build the apps – conforming to Apple’s requirements.

    I like that solution.

    The next question is:

How do we get the compiled app onto the company’s server. These apps will not go into either the Apple or Android app stores.

We create the app, compile it on your system, then how do we get the files to our server for deployment to the company employees?

Please tell me it’s as easy as …

App Center Builder downloads your app (.ipa file) into a subdirectory with the name pattern <project>_ios/.

See this document on how to setup your server to wireless install an app – this is exactly how App Center sets up user’s apps for wireless installation:

    As usual, a thorough answer.

Do we have access to the directory location, re:

“App Center Builder downloads your app (.ipa file) into a subdirectory with the name pattern <project>_ios/. ”

So the actual app would be located on your server, and we provide a link to the app location?

How do we move the actual app files from the above directory to our client’s server?

Is there an FTP connection or do we have some control panel access to the app subdirectory?

Sorry about the naive questions, but the “mechanics” of how this is done needs to be resolved before we embark.

    >o we have access to the directory location, re:

Yes, the app (.ipa) file is automatically downloaded to your workstation at the completion of the build process. See this screenshot of an ios dir/file created by mobione. See attachment iosappfile.png

You should setup your own distribution server and upload your .ipa file(s) to it. Then provide a web page with links to the ipa and the manifest as described in that enterprise distribution doc from previous post.

WARNING: Do not link to the ipa url provided by App Center in an email notification. App Center is for development use only and urls are not reliable for long term use.

Now the question has been really thoroughly answered.

Thanks so much for your help and patience.

We have been building web apps with MobiONE and Apple’s new IOS had mooted the “back button” feature, so we either work-around, but have advised the client to consider making these “real” native apps.

We will now pursue the developer licensing.

Do we actually need to have an Enterprise Licenses in this case, or would a simple “Developers” License work to build multiple apps via your system.

    Herb,
You will need the Enterprise Licence, a standard developer licence will not allow you to host native apps yourself they can only be distributed through the app store. I think you have been down this road before.

    Thanks for the heads up.

We are NOT going to distribute via the app store.

These apps are for internal use only, no public access or distribution.

We’ll do a developer test first, then move to the Enterprise version.

    Again, thanks for the input.

We have had to go to the “Mac solution” for publishing development apps for client viewing.

Before we sunk money in a Mac machine, a client-friend loaned us an iMac for a short period.

We used it to obtain all the necessary developer files from Apple for our apps and generated them just fine.

After obtaining all the “fun” Apple files, etc. we purchased “BetaBuilder” which is a Mac app – not a device app.

This $9.99 puppy works great and allows us to host the development apps on our own servers.

This is a great solution for taking the load off MobiONE’s server for our apps and letting the clients download them for review from our server URL. Gives clients a “warm and fuzzy” feeling to see their apps on our server – if only for look & see functions.
