In your steps above, did you copy the link file into the dir when you tried the local user install, or did you create a fresh new one that you made sure was pointing at your home-dir intsall of MyEclipse?

Right after I sent that message, I removed all previous installations of eclipse and myeclipse, deleted my workspaces and reinstalled both as myself in my home directory. It still didn’t work.

As for the other question, yes, I did a chown -R on both installation directories.

And the link was created manually.

Should ME work with M9? I can try a fresh install tonight after M9 comes out (if the servers will support the load, that is).

    It still didn’t work.

Let’s take a step back. Can you tell us exactly what test you’re setting up and running and what your expected outcome is so we can replicate it?

    Should ME work with M9?

No. We’ll need to update for M9 next week.

As for the other question, yes, I did a chown -R on both installation directories.

I’m getting thrown off again… if we are installing completely as your own user, never changing users, and creating all files yourself… why did you need to chown -R anything? Or were you talking about previously failed installed?

    Should ME work with M9?

Not yet, there were some API breaks that we will sync back up once M9 comes out.

I’m going to list step-by-step instructions for what I want you to try (you might have done this already, but just humor me before all my hair falls out), please do exactly as I list the steps here, don’t take any short cuts or copy any files from anywhere. If I request that you “make a ham sandwich and dance around” please humor me so we can rule out ANY possibilities.

      1) Close all your apps, logout of your desktop and your local account on your Linux box.
      2) Login as your local user
      3) Fire up your desktop (assuming you aren’t already in it)
3.5) Drop to a console and type: “mv ~/workspace ~/workspace_old”, this will rename the old workspace dir assuming one exists.
      4) Open up a browser, download this file to your $HOME directory: http://download.eclipse.org/downloads/drops/S-3.0M8-200403261517/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.0M8-linux-gtk.zip
      Fast Mirror Here: http://eclipse.mirrors.tds.net/downloads/drops/S-3.0M8-200403261517/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.0M8-linux-gtk.zip
      5) When the download is done, drop to a console and type the following:

      prompt> cd ~
      prompt> unzip eclipse-SDK-3.0M8-linux-gtk.zip
      prompt> cd eclipse
      prompt> ./eclipse

      6) Let the install finish and start Eclipse, then Exit eclipse.
      7) Now go here with your browser: http://www.myeclipseide.com/Downloads+index-req-viewsdownload-sid-6.html and download this file (manual install): http://www.myeclipseide.com/Downloads+index-req-getit-lid-40.html to your $HOME directory again.
      8) When its done, drop to a console and type the following:

      prompt> cd ~
      prompt> mkdir myeclipse
      prompt> mv eclipse-SDK-3.0M8-linux-gtk.zip myeclipse/
      prompt> cd myeclipse
      prompt> unzip myeclipse_030702.zip
      prompt> cd ~/eclipse/links
      prompt> touch com.genuitec.eclipse.MyEclipse.link
      prompt> nano -w com.genuitec.eclipse.MyEclipse.link
      *nano*> add the line: "path=/home/<YOUR USER NAME>/myeclipse"
*nano*> add 1 blank newline at end, save the file and exit.

      9) Now type “cd ~/eclipse” and then “./eclipse” to run Eclipse again. You may/may not be prompted to finish the installation, either way finish it and then check out the Help > About page to see if you have a MyEclipse button.
      10) Now create a new Web Module Project, New > Project > J2EE > Web Module Project, name it “TestWeb” and leave all the default settings, hit Finish.
      11) Go into the WebRoot right, create New > File > JSP, leave all default settings and hit OK (probably create MyJsp.jsp).
      12) Open up the JSP file, and add the code:

      <%
          String totallyBroken = ;

and hit save. If no error markers showed up, double checkec the workbench setting “Perform build on resource modification” like we mentioned before, and also check your JSP Editor settings to make sure it is set to Compile JSPs.

      13) (Lucky #13 is the last step) If NONE of this worked, go turn on the shower, unplug the computer, and roll it on in on a dolly or something and leave it in there to think about what its done.

Honestly if that doesn’t work, short of sending you my Hard Drive, I’m out of ideas.

OK, I’ll do all that tonight or this weekend. Then I’ll let you know.

I tried it and it worked. I think the problem is with my project. What tipped me off was when I had to create the WebProject. I didn’t do that initially because my code existed already. I remember running the “Add Web Capabilities” to my project.

I tried it again, but when I press the “Finish” button, nothing happens. The window just stays there. Actually, I have an errror in the log that says:

!MESSAGE Cannot nest output folder 'Nitido/src/web/admin/WEB-INF/classes' inside 'Nitido/src/web'.
    !ENTRY com.genuitec.eclipse.j2eedt.core 1 1 May 24, 2004 00:15:25.509
    !MESSAGE WebProject Capabilities Error:
    !STACK 1
Java Model Exception: Java Model Status [Cannot nest output folder 'Nitido/src/web/admin/WEB-INF/classes' inside 'Nitido/src/web'.]

It looks like I have to change a few things around in order to get things to work properly.

Well, I guess I was right: the problem turned out to be something stoopid. Sorry for wasting so much of your time. 🙁

You didn’t waste anyone’s time. Our job is to support our users, and that’s just what we intend to keep doing 😉

I’m glad everything is up and running now. This thread will make a great reference for other users having similar problems. I also want to thank you for hanging in there so long and trying every little thing we suggested. Many users would (understandably so) get fed up and just sign off completely on MyEclipse, so we really appreciate you patience.
