Right now, I’m running 5.5M1 although I’ve noticed this problem on other versions.

In the upper right part of the IDE, there’s a tab with a dropdown icon, the perspective name, and a >> icon. Available perspectives are split between the dropdown and the >> icons according to some formula that remains mysterious. When I’m debugging, I want to switch among DB explorer, Java, and Debug perspectives. The perspective selection moves between the icons so I often guess wrong the first time I try to switch to a perspective. It may be useful to have an icon with the “active” perspectives, but there should be an icon with “all available’ perspectives, even it they are also on the “active” list.

If you move your mouse along the left border of that button panel, you should see it switch to a “Horizontal resize” cursor, then you can drag left, making more room for the icons and then they will all be visible.

I also suggest you go to Window > Preferences > General > Appearance, and uncheck the “Show text on the perspective bar” setting, this will give you a lot more room to display the icons.

Displaying whatever text goes with >> isn’t the problem. I don’t need that text. The problem is that Java and Debug move from one dropdown to the other. I have not figured out how to predict which dropdown is hiding the perspective I want.

Why not just make the field big enough that there is no drop down? I believe the algorithm is last-used.

If I widen the display area and have to use the laptop screen, the toolbar takes multiple lines and I lose vertical real estate. I would really like the left-hand dropdown to always contain Java and Debug. Then I could ignore the other area and always know where to find my perspective.
