Scott AndersonParticipantAll,
Now that the Eclipse Visual Editor project has released version 1.0, we’d like to know what you think about it. Does it work? Is it high quality and helpful to you? Have you used it with MyEclipse? Do you think bundling it would be a useful enhancement for MyEclipse? Other comments?

PaulParticipantI myself haven’t used it yet, but soley because my current project does not demand it, and I don’t want to go through the hassle of installing it. If ME were to bundle it, I would certainly not complain – especially while it remains a separate install for Eclipse.
In short, I can’t comment on the stability, but I do believe it would be useful. Up until now though I think most of your clients probably do server side stuff mostly, and this might open you up to a new group.

Jon NermutMemberI think that bundling things like VE, Hyades and even CDT with my eclipse is a good idea, as it decreases install hassles by ensuring that everything integrates well.
But I would add the following suggestions:
* Any extra bundled plugins *must not* increase bloat! That is take up memory or decrease performance when you are not using them. ME is already a huge memory user and performance suffers. I don’t think anyone would want extra features if performance was going to decrease further.
* ME should always bundle the latest versions of the projects
* Perhaps things like VE should live in their own install site so that you can turn them on and off with Help->Software Updates->Manage Configuration
Cheers,
Jon

wingstechMemberI’d like too test VE since i’m starting a new project using Tapestry (www.tapestry.org), but i’ll never switch again to MS Win for any reason, So i’m not able to say how it works. It should be very nice to have that dreamed VE under Linux.

snpeMemberVE 1.0.1 work fine with eclipse 3.0.1 and ME 3.8.2 – You have to download VE from eclispe and it is all

Andrew FreemanMemberAbsolutely! Why haven’t you already?

aaimeMemberIn my opinion, it’s a starter, but not good enough… too slow, I don’t like the way it generates code. I prefer to use Jigloo instead (www.cloudgarden.com), it’s commercial but not expensive, and the author is usually quite responsive to feature requests. While still not perfect, it’s much better than VE in my opinion.

Bjarne PedersenMemberI have been trying it a little, but i would realy start using it when it supports JSP 🙂

Dave S-BMemberI agree with jnermut in that bundling more plugins is a good thing – so long as you have the choice of what components you want. Distributions, like MyEclipse, are a lifesaver for making sure all your plugins are compatible with each other, but they can start to get really big after a while. If you added “optional” components via the install or update sites that would be great.
On the VE front, I’ve used it a little and it seems quite good once you get used to it, if a little slow. Pretty good for a first release I think.December 26, 2004 at 6:00 pm #221860
xepernoMemberI’m lazy I’m going to pay $199 for a non-commercial license and a year of SA & support

and if I ever come up with a marketable product I’ll upgrade my licenseDecember 27, 2004 at 1:19 pm #221894
jeremiahMemberI’ve used VE quite a bit on a project. It’s slow as hell on a linux system. Crashes are much less frequent than they used to be. I persoannly love the way it generates code. Very nice if you are adhearing to an MVC pattern. I’d love to not have to keep both it and ME up to date. On the flip side though I don’t know if I’d want my name associated with it. I can’t really stress enough how slow it can be at times. I also love the minmal impact that it has on your code. It adds but a few comments versus netbeans with has this whole other file to keep track of to edit a form. It’s a very slick product , just slow at the moment.

Java Server Faces is supposed to solve most of the web client weaknesses.

jdestefMemberI noticed that a visual JSF designer is on the roadmap. When will this be available?
Thanks
