henkMemberIt’s now over a month since the last question was asked. Is there already a date set? I presume the visual JSF designer will make it in 3.9, but will that be a limited features designer, or a fully featured one?

Russ CaldwellMemberSorry to say, I’m just not that impressed with it. The only way I find a visual editor worth using is if it accurately renders a page. Most pages I’ve tried with it are using css and divs for structure and they don’t often come out looking the same as they do in an actual browser.

albartellMemberI am also very interested as to when JSF tags will be supported in the Visual Designer. Any comment on this?

Don NelsonMemberIMHO, the VE is not bad for a 1.0 release component. At this point, I would rather use WindowBuilder pro, but it’s nice to have a product that supports SWT.

Edmond WongMemberI use VE recently on a P4 2.8Ghz Windows XP platform, and also on a P4 1.7 Windows 2000 laptop, the performance is good. I have it running with the MyEclipseIDE 3.84 for Eclipse 3.01. Also, I haven’t run into any problem when I try some simple Swing and SWT examples. The quality of this open source product is very good.

David RobertsMemberI’ve tried to use VE, with limited success. That’s mostly due to some of our components not having default constructors though. Its getting there….
And, I also agree web clients are generally week, and only really any use when you don’t want to interact much or particularly efficiently with an application. Compare the use cases of a website, with the Eclipse IDE – you’re not likely to want Eclipse re-written in JSF, are you?

Edmond WongMemberHi,
I tried the VE1.1 M2, using it to build couple forms to enter orders, order details and etc.. The performance is much better using VE1.0. Generally speaking it is not as good as Netbean’s except the performance, but this is the only thing that is free and a Eclipse plugin. I do encourage people to try it out, and provide feedback to the VE project team.
I don’t think it does any harm by bundling it with MyEclipseIDE, since I am not only doing server side stuff all the time.
Thanks,
Edmond

Scott AndersonParticipantDid anyone do a comparison between Instantiation’s fine product and VE? Opinions?

David Orriss JrParticipantI’m a cheap weasel… If the latest VE makes it into 4.0 GA I’ll be a happy camper. And it’s not a bad tool either. There’s room for improvement but at least it’s something.

Marc EndeMemberI’ve tried VE with Eclipse 3.1 and MyEclipse 4 pre GA (M3). It doesn’t work as expected. I think it’s a nice point when it will be integrated.
But don’t spend your time on integrating VE when other points are open. It’s not so important (imho).October 18, 2005 at 12:49 am #239603
Edmond WongMemberI’ve tried VE 1.1.0.1 with Ecliipse 3.1 and ME 4.02 GA. I don’t have any issue. In Instantiation, you have to click on property to change text label, but in VE, you can pretty much set the text on the visual bean. This is one of the nice things I found with VE.

Edmond WongMemberAlso, in VE, one of the good feature I notice lately is that I can select multiple widgets (ctrl-left mouse click), and change the orientation for those widgets all at once. Not sure if Instantiation can do the same though.

Kai WegnerMemberI really need an VE for GUI and stuck with Netbeans. Now, I’m using two IDE, one for writing Code (ME) and the other one for build GUI elements (NetBeans).
The real problem for me is that there is no Eclipse VE for Mac OS X atm. 🙁 -
