I wonder if there is already some more detailed ETA to when the outstanding bugs in the JSP editor will be fixed (among others, the Christmas tree effect). I know that a lot is promissed for next year’s 5.0 release, but I just wondered if there is already anything going on behind the scenes.

Also, I just wanted to let you guys know we still suffer from the bugs I reported last year. I know that people often think that if they don’t hear complaints anymore, then there’s no problem anymore (we often prioritize our development todo’s this way too, so we know ;)). Of course, it’s of little use to report the same bugs over and over again.

    Arjan,
The bottom line of it is that we are waiting for the WTP team to stabalize the editor into a usable state that we can pull it in. It would truely be a business mistake on our part to develop our own JSP editor in parallel to the WTP efforts going on so we take what they create and patch/enhance it from there. There are quite a few big ticket items on their TODO list (e.g. EL autocomplete and the like) that we are dying to get into our branch of the editor but they are simply not ready to be ported yet.

There is a lot more autocomplete work going on in the JSP editor, but the christmas tree effect specifically is a side effect of the reconciler, which is a hugely complex real time parser. If we were to simply fix the constant abusive reparsing more than we already have, all that work would go out the window when we port the refreshed WTP copy.

As stressed out as you are feeling like the editor isn’t getting attention, we are 10x more stressed out because we need to deliver a viable product based on it, relatively bug free. You really can’t imagine how big the code base is for the JSP editor alone so this is a big deal that we are going to do methodically.

Management has already committed to MANY milestone releases of 5.0 given the nature of the changes, so while our release is set next year, you should be able to get your hands on earlier versions sooner than that, Maybe still Jan time frame though. I would point out that there will be bugs, so this might be a mixed bag and not likely a solution for your team.

We appreciate you continued support, the temptation to jump ship at times of frustation can get quite high, but at the end of the day we are working for you guys.
