    hi,

so i can run eclipse fine when i’m logged in as the root user (so as root, I navigate to the user’s desktop and run eclipse from there), but when i try and run it as the user i get an error and a log entry. The log entry is at the bottom of this post. I thought the problem was no having the right jdk installed, but now that it works for my root user I’m not sure. any help/advice would be great.

    thanks in advance,
    dntorp

You don’t have permission to to write to the Eclipse configuration directory (/home/dweintrop/Desktop/downloaded_software/eclipse/configuration), which is needed to update the plugin caches. You should install and run as the same user to simplify things.

    thanks for the response.

I only have two users on my system (dweintrop and root), I can run eclipse as root, but not a dweintrop. to me it sounds like your interpreting the error message as saying:
dweintrop doesn’t have access to write to /home/dweintrop/Desktop/downloaded_software/eclipse/configuration
is that even possible? and if so, any ideas on how that got set and how to cahnge it.

    thanks in advance,

Yes, that’s my interpretation of the error message below, which states exactly that:

Caused by: java.io.FileNotFoundException: /home/dweintrop/Desktop/downloaded_software/eclipse/configuration/org.eclipse.core.runtime/.manager/.fileTableLock (Permission denied)

is that even possible? and if so, any ideas on how that got set and how to cahnge it.

You could change the directory permissions for that single directory and all files in it using chmod, but you’ll likely find that this is just the first of many errors when the “owning” user isn’t the same as the “using” user. The other solution, a bit of a “big hammer”, but faster than a reinstall is to simply open a shell and change directory into the Eclipse installation root and perform: chmod -R o+w *
That will give everyone write access to everything under that directory. However, I’d still suggest you simply reinstall as the user you’ll log in as to run the application.
