    Mac question:

I am trying to install the JaxB XJC plug-in for MyEclipse (latest version) by copying the folder into the /Library/Genuitec/Common/plugins folder on the Mac (OS/X 10.6.1).

See this Website for details on the plug-in:

    https://jaxb-workshop.dev.java.net/plugins/eclipse/xjc-plugin.html

    —————–

According to the plug-in’s documentation, I should be able to install it into the plug-ins directory (see directory at top of message) and right click an XSD file and see a JaxB menu item.

However, I must be doing something wrong since after copying the plug-ins folder to the path above and re-starting MyEclipse, I get no JaxB menu item when I right-click the XSD (XML schema) fiile.

Pulse Explorer had no idea about this plug-in when I searched so I need to do a manual install.

Thanks much in advance for your help.

Please see MyEclipse Help -> “MyEclipse Learning Center” -> “Installation & Updates” -> “Working with Update Sites” section 4 (“Installing Plug-ins Using the Eclipse Drop-ins Folder”).

    Hello Eugene,

Are you suggesting there is this help menu path using MyEclipse? If so, what version are you using? I’m using 7.5. Are you referring to something else where this MENU path exists?

If, however, I use HELP -> WORKING WITH UPDATE SITES (this menu path actually exists in MyEclipse), I just get a blank page!

I tried this with both Safari and Firefox, but the message I get is that your server dropped the connection.

It would always be useful to just hear from you exactly how to do something, when it’s simple like my question, rather than being pointed to, for me, anyway, non-working help.

Here’s the URL that your “help” page took me to which was blank:

    http://127.0.0.1:53311/help/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.genuitec.myeclipse.doc%2Fhtml%2Fquickstarts%2Finstall_update_sites%2Findex.html

    What’s going on?

Still no answer to my question….

    Thanks.

    Eugene,

    Just a quick follow up….

Could you please tell me what folder (on the Mac) to drop the plug-in into? I wrote you specific details about what I tried in my initial message and even gave you the URL for the plug-in itself.

I actually did check the MyEclipse help before I posted the message. To be honest, it’s frustrating when your product (or maybe it’s just Eclipse) seems to fail at everything I try the first time.

The user shouldn’t “need” to go to the help. There should be an intuitive way, IMHO, through your product, to install plug-ins (that Pulse doesn’t know about), that …works.

    Thanks again.

That doc provides detailed walkthrough on how to deploy add-ons for MyEclipse.

The menu item works for me… Can you open menu contents (Help/Help Contents). Then navigate “MyEclipse Learning Center” / “Installation & Updates” / “Working with Update Sites” / “Installing Plug-ins Using the Eclipse Drop-ins Folder”?

    #302552

I dropped unzipped plugin to “/Library/Genuitec/Profiles/MyEclipse Latest/dropins” (note – the path on your system might be a bit different).

After I ran MyEclipse the dialog was shown (I attached the screenshot). I did not test the compatibility of this plugin with MyEclipse.

Nope, sorry, it doesn’t work here. I just get a “loading” message in Firefox. Same in Safari.

    Is this another MyEclipse bug?

Why isn’t the help on Your site?

    Isn’t http://127.0.0.1:53779/help/index.jsp ….. “localhost”???

Also, it appears your revised/corrected your help path in your last message. You didn’t mention “Help Contents” in your initial posting.

    So, what next?

Do you have an alternative site for help?

Is the help completely not working for you? There seems to be some problem with your configuration.

Yes. MyEclipse has an embedded HTTP server that serves help pages.

You can reach the same help page either using the help menu (2 clicks) or navigating our help contents.

All I could find so far is http://www.jroller.com/myeclipseblog/entry/adding_drop_ins_to_myeclipse – but it is a rather old and outdated help entry. Though there aren’t many changes.

I don’t seem to have this path at all.

    Under /Library/Genuitec, I have…

    …MyEclipse 7.1/drop-ins

(I put the zip file here, but it didn’t work)

    …PulseExplorer/plug-ins

(I put the zip file here, but it didn’t work)

    and…

    ….common/plug-ins

(you guessed it. I put the zip file here and it didn’t work)

I also tried to unzip the plug-in and put it in the common/plug-ins folder.

    —-

I also looked for this folder under my username/Library, but it wasn’t there.

So, where should I look to find this “Profiles” folder?

    Thanks.

    Eugene,

This comment goes back to your recently-re-written update manager for the Mac.

Perhaps you should ask Riyad about this too….but my question is this: How can my Mac have a bad configuration when I run your update manager and it says I’m totally up to date?

is the MyEclipse configuration that fragile?

I’m assuming you have a mac and can run help, right?

if that’s the case, then MyEclipse should be able to diagnose simple problems and fix them or at least report them with reasonable error messages. In this case, sadly another apparently non-handled error condition (when trying to use help), MyEclipse just hangs….

    Sigh…..

OK, putting the file into the drop-ins folder worked. Thanks!

I’m not sure why plug-ins can’t be added through the interface, and if they can, why it’s so mysterious.

I’m still concerned by the problems with your MyEclipse update manager. It has apparently left my mac with a non-working configuration (regarding help).

    Glad to hear.

Currently Eclipse plug-ins are designed to be distributed through update sites, not as zipped files. Pulse (and MyEclipse) provide some really great features like storing “profile” on the server so you can configure once and then download to several workstations. But the plugin should be available on the update site.

This is something we haven’t seen before. Do you have some software that can block socket connections to local HTTP server?

    Eugene,

First of all, thanks for all your replies. You’re terrific! I appreciate your help.

***** So, you have a mac with 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and you can run help, correct??? **** (You’ve tested this on a mac there, right?)

I have Tomcat running, but it’s on port 8080. Your “HELP” is running on a totally different port.

There’s nothing that should be blocking your stuff, if it’s configured properly.

What’s the process name? I’ll look for it on the mac and see if your server is running?

Unfortunately, we were unable to get 10.6 in our team yet. I plan to upgrade at some later time.

To my knowledge, help server is ran in-process. Unfortunately there is slight chance of it being broken under Snow Leopard…
