I installed MyEclipse ide workbench on my computer which is running Windows XP. I used the .exe installer. The installation proceeded without error but there was one warning as follows :

<B>
Create Shortcut: C:\Documents and Settings\Steven Harris\Start Menu\Programs\MyEclipse Enterprise Workbench\MyEclipse.lnk
Status: WARNING
Additional Notes: WARNING – Shortcut has no target: ignoring
</B>

The installation process put an icon on my desktop labeled MyEclipse but when I click that icon eclipse comes up but the interface does not look anything like the screens shots in the workbench help.

Workbench help is accessible from eclipse but there is no M in the circle icon to click as shown in the help screenshots. None of the workbench perspectives can be seen.

I tried to follow instructions in the documentation that say I should perform a Window->Customize Perspective->Other and select the perspectives. But “other” does not appear on that menu, leading me to believe that no other perspectives are registered with eclipse. It’s as if eclipse can not see any
perspective coming from MyEclipse. If any kind soul out there has an any idea of what might have gone wrong I would greatly appreciate the feedback.

I suspect the problem may have something to do with the installation warning, but I am not certain.

Many thanks,

Steve

Can you please post all the information we request in the Posting Guidelines thread at the top of this forum? That will give us some context so that we can determine if this is an installation issue or a configuration problem. Thanks.

Sorry, until you gave me the link I had trouble finding the posting guidelines.

What operating system and version are you running?
Windows XP Version 2002 Sevice Pack 1

What Eclipse version and build id are you using? (Help > About Eclipse Platform)
Version 3.0.0 build 200406251208

– Was Eclipse freshly installed for MyEclipse?
No, but I have not used it since installing it several months ago.

– If not, was it upgraded to its current version using the update manager?
No

– Are any other external plugins installed?
No. MyEclipse is the first and only set of plug-ins I have installed

– How many plugins in the <eclipse>/plugins directory are like org.eclipse.pde.*
A search operation from Windows Explorer reveals no file names that match the pattern org.eclipse.pde.*

What MyEclipse version are you using? (Help > About Eclipse Platform > Features)
There are 5 entries listed on the table from Genuitec, LCC. All list 3.8.2 as the version number.

What JDK version are you using to run Eclipse? (java -version)
java version “1.4.2”
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2-b28)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2-b28, mixed mode)

What JDK version are you using to launch your application server?
I am not running an application server

What steps did you take that resulted in the issue?
I installed MyEclipse using the Windows installer.

What application server are you using?
None.

Are there any exceptions in the Eclipse log file? (<workspace>/.metadata/.log)
There is no exception per se but there is a message that might be relevant :
!ENTRY org.eclipse.ui 4 4 Oct 11, 2004 22:32:52.707
!MESSAGE Category com.genuitec.eclipse.views.myEclipseCategory not found for view org.eclipse.monitor.view. This view added to ‘Other’ category.

I am brand new to eclipse, just starting to try to figure things out. Many thanks for your help.

Steve,

A search operation from Windows Explorer reveals no file names that match the pattern org.eclipse.pde.*

The problem is that you’ve installed only the Eclipse JDT or Platform release, but not the full Eclipse SDK. The full SDK is needed in order to run MyEclipse successfully. You’ll need to download the Eclipse 3.0.1 SDK and reinstall in order to get a working configuration.

Thank you, Scott. I think I am making progress, but I am still not quite there yet. Here is what I did.

1) I un-installed MyEclipse using control panel (remove programs).
2) I deleted the C:\eclipse folder from my computer
3) From eclipse web site I downloaded the file “eclipse-platform-SDK-3.0.1-win32.zip”
4) I unzipped the eclipse SDK onto my C: drive.
5) I installed MyEclipseIde using the installer provided.

In the Windows->Preferences dialog I see the WorkBench node. But under editors there are only three choices namely — “Annotations”, “Quick Diff”, and “Text Editor”.

But I do not see a node for MyEclipse.

When I create a project, folder, and an HTML file and “open” the file it is simply displayed in the internal eclipse web browser. The editor does not come up.

Also there is no item in the main menu bar called “MyEclipse” as shown in the tutorials (should there be?).

Also when I search for org.eclipse.pde.* under the C:\eclipse folder I still come up empty.

My apologies if I am doing something wrong. This stuff is just not obvious to me. Many thanks for all your help.

Steve,

The file name that you need is “eclipse-SDK-3.0.1-win32.zip. You should be able to find this on the first download link of this page….
http://download.eclipse.org/downloads/index.php

So delete the C:\eclipse and use the new file. Note: the proper eclipse install file should be around 85M. Now install MyEclipse and you should be good to go.

We have some new and improved quickstart tutorials located on the documentation page.

http://www.myeclipseide.com/ContentExpress-display-ceid-67.html

Hope this helps.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for your speedy reply. I have taken your suggestion. I am attempting to install MyEclipse by strictly following the installation procedure from the link you provided.

So far I have performed the following :

1) Uninstalled MyEclipse using the control panel “remove programs” function.
2) Deleted the C:\eclipse folder on my hard drive.
3) Went to the eclipse download site according to the URL that you provided.
4) Downloaded the file “eclipse-SDK-3.0.1-win32.zip”.

Now here is where I run in to a problem.

When I look at that file in Windows Explorer the file shows as being 55,662 KB and not the (85.4mb) as stated in the installation tutorial. Is 85 mb the zipped or unzipped size?? I assumed the tutorial meant the size of the zip file. If that is the case then I am getting a file of a different length.

I do not want to proceed until I have every single step perfect just as the installation tutorial states.

I do have Norton anti-virus installed on my system which performs a scan of each zip file I downloaded looking for viruses. Hopefully it is not truncating the zip file!

I can open the downloaded zip file just fine and extract it’s contents but the fact that the size mentioned by the tutorial and the size of the zip as shown by Windows Explorer differ by so much worries me.

Any ideas??

Thanks so much for your help and patience.

Steve

Steve,

Eclipse 3.0.1 is over 85MB. Here’s the exact URL from the main Eclipse download site:
http://download.eclipse.org/downloads/drops/R-3.0.1-200409161125/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.0.1-win32.zip

Scott and Greg,

I now have a successful install. I simply had downloaded the wrong version of Eclipse (several times). Once you pointed me to the right download URL, I had no problems.

Many Thanks,

Steve
