Pardon the capital, shouting letters of the subject, but I’m sensing that there must be some chaos at MyEclipse and that the front line forum support personnel have not been fully briefed on the recent 7.0 release of the product.
More than any other problem, failure to address keeping the product properly updated when so many people are using it at work behind strong firewalls is the worst. We simply can’t talk our IT department people into opening the holes.
When you’re behind a strong firewall and you try to install updates, the process hangs and eventually times out.
The response I’ve received from the front line support personnel is as follows:
“Doug,
When we released 7.0.1, we updated the archived update site on the Download portion of the website so folks in locked down environments can pickup changes that way. I hope that helps. “Well, it doesn’t help at all. Why? Because the instructions for updating by using the archived update site are no longer valid in MyEclipse 7.0. Here they are repeated:
“To use: be sure Eclipse 3.4 “Classic” is installed. Download the MyEclipse archived update then go to Help > Software Updates > Available Software > Add Site > Archive… > Select the archived update site you downloaded > OK. Select features “MyEclipse Enterprise Workbench” and any additional ones you descire like “Matisse4MyEclipse” and then click “Install…” following the install wizard to completion.”
Using the instructions above, you’re stopped dead in your tracks with “Available Software,” a menu choice that no longer exists in version MyEclipse 7.0.
MyEclipse needs to have a huge staff meeting and decide how they’re going to address this issue.
I’m begging you, please put together a coherent plan on this issue alone and many of your other problems will 7.0 may fall by the wayside.
Thanks for listening,
Doug Hurst

Loyal WaterMemberDoug,
I just got a reply from the dev team and there seems to be some confusion here. The instructions mentioned above are to setup MyEclipse 7.0.1 from Eclipse 3.4. The Available Software tab should be available when you open software updates from Eclipse 3.4.Attachments:
You must be logged in to view attached files.January 13, 2009 at 4:22 pm #293475I’m not following you. I have MyEclipse 7.0 downloaded and installed. Now I need to install the updates it says are available everytime it loads, but I can’t because of the firewall issue. Can you publish explicit step-by-step instructions on how to do the updates in a firewall situation?
I don’t think you can run Eclipse 3.4 by itself can you? The MyEclipse plug-ins have already been plugged in. Also, when you install 7.0, it no longer put Eclipse in a separate directory like it did with previous versions.
Still frustrated.

dariusgeminiMemberDoug,
What he was trying to say was to download Eclipse 3.4 classic from http://www.eclipse.org.
On their download page, the last package that you can select is 3.4.
What he was saying is that you get Eclipse’s base install, and then go through those instructions. (I’m trying this right now.)I’m having the same problems you are. I’m on a military installation, and they have the mother of all firewalls here(plus the most locked down workstations I’ve ever had the mispleasure of working with.)
Now, all of this being said, I’ve installed the newest version of MyEclipse, and installed it.
When I go to help/about I get this information.MyEclipse Enterprise Workbench
Version: 7.0
Build id: 7.0-20081201(c) Copyright Genuitec, L.L.C. 2000-2008. All rights reserved.
Visit http://www.myeclipseide.com/This product includes software developed by the following
Eclipse Foundation http://www.eclipse.org/
Apache Software Foundation http://www.apache.org/In the workbench features tab, four of the Genuitec features are at version 7.0.0.zmyeclipse70020081206, with MyEclipse Enterprice Workbench being at 7.0.1.zmyeclipse70020081206.
In the plug-in details tab, all of the Pulse plug-ins are at version 2.3.2.200812171120.
The only reason I mention any of this is to ensure that I DO have the patch installed, since the main screen shows 7.0, instead of 7.0.1, which is what I would expect to see.
Thanks!

I downloaded and installed 7.0.1 as you suggested. I see when I look at Help > About > Feature Details that indeed 7.0.1 has been installed. However, when the program loads, it still prompts me to install the following:
SpringIDE for MyEclipse – AJDT Support
I click install, but as before, my communication will not get through the firewall
I appreciate the comment from dariusgemini as regards using Eclipse 3.4 and the Archived Update, but I don’t believe this is the proper answer. This is still a problem MyEclipse MUST address in a far more simplified manner. Something on the order of…
From the Web Site, Keep the Archive Update constantly updated.
From the IDE
Help > Software Updates > Install updates from Archived Update download
This would be very similar to how we did it prior to 7.0 (7.0.1).
You commitment to PULSE is admirable, but your commitment to your customers ought to trump your commitment to PULSE.

Riyad KallaMemberDouglas,
If you didn’t have 7.0.1 you wouldn’t see that version anywhere (and you are correct, we only re-versioned 4 or so plugins for that fix), and on the initial startup dashboard you would see a Pulse Services update, which it looks like you already have. As for Spring and other 3rd party plugins — we aren’t going to regenerate our archived update site every time they refresh — AJDT has refreshed I think 3x since 7.0 went out.
Most locked down work environments tunnel everyone through a proxy, Pulse will attempt to auto-detect this from your browser settings, but you can override them under Window > Prefs > General > Network Connections. As for firewall specifically, we try and be firewall friendly by routing traffic through 80 or 443 in locked down environments.
Doug I’m going to follow up with you privately to get some custom system log information from you to figure out what’s going on specifically in your setup.
