    Hi,

I posted a couple days back regarding version 5.0 downloads and now have some follow-up questions:

What is your policy regarding removing products from the download page? When 5.5 is released, does that mean 5.1.1 will no longer be downloadable from the website? Yet you still have 4.1, 3.8, and 2.8 on the download page. Does that just mean you keep one version around for every major release?

I ask this because when we certify our product against a certain version of MyEclipse, we need to make sure that our customers will still have access to that version when they do their own implemenation. If releases are removed from the download page every 6-9 months that is not sustainable for us because by the time we release, the version of MyEclipse we developed on will no longer be available. It would really help if we could know this information in advance.

    Thanks,

    –Steve

    Steve,

The current policy is to leave the latest production release available for a particular Eclipse platform. For example, the 4.1.x series was for Eclipse 3.1, the 5.x series is for Eclipse 3.2, and the 6.x series will be for Eclipse 3.3. So, yes, basically we keep one version around for every major Eclipse release, currently. We do this so that we don’t confuse new users with too many options about what they should download. Since we ship 6-9 releases a year, providing all of them as selectable options would be daunting to a newbie. So, that’s how we got “here”.

That said, we don’t want to cause you any grief shipping your products or verifying on a MyEclipse install. In the past, when people request specific links to specific old version we’ve always provided them via email (since they’re still on the servers), and then you could provide them to your clients if needed. Would that work for you?

Ah, that makes sense to me now. I think that sounds like a suitable solution. Thanks for the quick reply!

No worries. Just send an email to support at myeclipseide.com when you need links to old builds. Just give them a quick reason why and it shouldn’t be an issue at all. Wouldn’t hurt to send in the URL for this thread where I told you it wouldn’t be an issue. 🙂
