I recently renamed the directory structure of my project. Now that I try to open it, it will not open and I receive the following error:

Problems occurred opening the selected resources.
The project description file (.project) for ‘PROJECT’ is missing. This file contains important information about the project. The project will not function properly until this file is restored.

However, the .project files are still present. The problem seems to be that the project properties are still pointing to the old, incorrect, directory structure. When I open my workspace, I can select the projects, but cannot open them. The project properties are shown with the location of the old directory structure.

I have searched through the entirety of the structure and removed all the references to the old directory structure found in the XML files that MyEclipse has created. But I cant find where the project properties are defined, in order to change the location to the accurate one.

    Hi codecodecode,

The .project file is located under [workspace directory]/[project name]. Right click on the project and click on properties. This will list you the location of your project. Close myeclipse, make changes to your .project file. Please make sure to avoid any special characters/ASCII characters like enter key, new line, etc as the .project file is *super* sensitive. Restart MyEclipse.
If this does not work, create a new project and define the directory structure as required and copy & paste or drag & drop relevant files.
If this does not work too, please create a new workspace and copy your projects.
    Hope this helps.

Nowhere in the .project file does it define where it expects the project to reside, i.e.

    C:\projects\project1\project1EAR
    C:\projects\project1\project1Web

However, somewhere this information is being defined, as when I renamed my folder to

    C:\projects\project2\project2EAR
    C:\projects\project2\project2Web

It gives me the error about the .project files not present, and the project properties continue to point to the “C:\projects\project1\project1EAR” and “C:\projects\project1\project1Web” which are directories which no longer exist.

I want to find out where this information is being stored, so that I may update it to reflect the correct directory structure.

I have a feeling you did not delete and reimport the projects into your workspace after you changed their locations; because of which Eclipse is looking for the project folder and metadata in a location which no longer exists.

    To correct this:
    1) Select the closed projects in your workspace and delete them (press delete or use context menu action). Eclipse will ask you if you want to delete from the file system as well, you can say no (irrelevant because the projects don’t exist at that location anyway)
Now you should no longer see the closed projects in your workspace.

    2) Select File > Import > General > Existing Projects into Workspace
Select the “Select root directory” option and specify the folder containing your projects (or specify the project folders directly, one at a time).
When you click finish, your projects should reappear in your workspace, ready to go.

Hope this helps, please let us know if you need further assistance.
