    Hello,

I think it is unfortunate that MyEclipse follows the pack of windoze tools in forcing a GUI installer onto its users that needs to be executed with root permissions under Linux/Unix. We have a strong policy over here not to do these kinds of things. The fact that this is not mentioned anywhere in the instructions also confirms to me that this product is probably made by windows programmers. On most Unix workstations, executing the installer means not only logging in as root, but also giving root access to the X server first (e.g. xhost localhost).

I am an eclipse developer – why dont you give me the tar.gz files to unpack manually? I just dont like to let some black box installer spit its files across my system, and with root privileges at that!

    thanks,
    Christian

We *provide* a double-click installer as a convenience for the thousands of our users who like to use them. You may choose to use our manual installation process if you like instead. It’s your choice.

Fine. If you go back to where you downloaded the double-click installer you’ll find a link for a manual installer at the bottom of the list. It’s a zip archive with HTML instructions inside.
