I selected Add/Remove Software from menu
Add Software… button
Add Locally button from right ‘Update Site’ (I will certainly not not user that strange Pulse tool and be forced to register…. Why the hell should I??)
Managed Sites… to add a update site (http://subclipse.tigris.org/update_1.4.x)
Now I selected a software package, and clicked Next
I had to repeat the above steps 4-5 time until I selected all packages I like to install. (Why can’t I choose all at once?)
Once all packages where selected I clicked Next and then Update.
The download started… and aborted with the following errors:

Why on earth is http://failsafe.poweredbypulse.com contacted when I try to install a software from subclipse.tigris.org which is not related to poweredbypluse.com? This is a serious privacy issue in my eyes…

How can I get the eclipse software update dialog back? It is much more usable and also works.
Sorry, but the changes in the Plugin and Update management make MyEclipse 7 really unusable in its current state.. I really want the old style Eclipse update back, or at least as an option to be used instead.

Sorry that you are having trouble. We are looking into the issue that you have reported. As far as the failsafe, when you try to install plugins from a 3rd party update site, many times their sites are down or temporarily unavailable and it prevents users from installing the plug-in. In MyEclipse 7.0 we try to prevent your plugin installation from failing and that includes a failover mechanism where if you can’t get the plugin you are looking for, we try to get the exact same plugin from our own repository. In your case it seems that both the tigris site and our own repository is failling. We will try to get the issue resolved. Thanks for taking the time to let report your issue.

Hi…

I have some more information on this issues. Apparently the problems are due to proxy/firewall use. Most of the companies I work with have very strict rules. MyEclipse attempts to do tunneled downloads through HTTP CONNECT. They are because of obvious security reasons prohibited. If MyEclipse could use GET or POST requests instead, like it is done when installing directly out of Pulse, things would work better.

While analyzing the network protocol I additionally run into many DNS lookup issues. There is a known issue with Eclipse too, when it uses a proxy all DNS lookups fail and cause blocked UI until timeouts are reached.
I ended up adding a huge list of myeclipse and poweredbypulse host names into my hosts file to workaround this problem. After that performance improved considerably. Anyway in case you have your own implementation of handling URLs, it could still persists after the problem is fixed in Eclipse. You might be interested in this bug entry that talks about the heavy UI lag coming from DNS lookups done by java.net.URL.

I would be very happy if you could resolve these issues during the next release, I really spent almost two days now to get things installed in a more or less usable way… It’s really a pain…

I’ve been trying to download from either method, the whole package and the update. DNS for the downloads site resolves to:

However, I get no reponse – only timeouts. wget tries all three addresses to get the eworkbench tarball, but times out with all three before cycling through again.

By ssh-ing into a server in the U.S., I was able to immediately wget the tarball, so there seems to be something blocking me from home (in Japan). I don’t yet know if it’s my ISP is blocking it or if the problem is Japan (or other foreign countries) being blocked on the downloads site. (traceroute doesn’t even get one hop.)
