In the past, I know the Mac version of MyEclipse was always missing a few desirable features that, of course, the Windows version had.

I’m considering coming back to MyEclipse from Intelij and was wondering if this previous functionality gap between the MyEclipse Windows and Mac versions has been closed. In the past, for example, the HTML editor, as I recall was limited to Windows version.

On the new genuitec Web site, I could not find that table that compared MyEclipse version capabilities by operating system as the old Web site had.

    Thanks in advance.

    Jim,

Nice to hear from you again. With 2015, the Visual designer and the REST explorer which were only available on Windows / Linux do work on all operating systems including OS X. The only feature that does not work, is the JavaScript Debugger, but we plan to add that functionality in the next couple of months – the JS debugger has been re-written from scratch and should make its way to MyEclipse 2015 CI 14 in the next month or two.

Do let us know if you need more information.

Thanks Brian for your wonderful reply….I’ll renew my subscription this week!

Frankly, one of the things that bothered me was when MyEclipse no longer reverted to regular “Eclipse” after the subscription expired (as it used to do), but in versions in the past few years, won’t even start if the subscription lapsed.

Why did you change that behavior?

    Jim,

Thank you for asking – we’ve been forced to make these changes due to rampant piracy of MyEclipse.

MyEclipse makes hundreds of core changes to fundamental “Eclipse” plugins that we build on top of, and it’s not possible to protect all these mods through license dialogs and warnings. Changes are present in core routines to improve efficiency and performance or fix fundamental bugs – many are not wizard or UI level changes.

So the “base Eclipse” that you reference is quite different from what you would get if you just downloaded the Java EE distribution, for instance. If we stopped all that code from working beyond your license period, but continued to allow the IDE to be used, you would be left with an unusable product, even where functionality outside MyEclipse is concerned.

Hope this sheds some light on our decision to make that change.

Sounds good. I wasn’t aware of the piracy issues.

    Makes sense now.

    Thanks.
