paperinikMemberHi I have tried myeclipse 5.5.1GA on Fedora 6 (now upgraded to 7), using both i586 and x86_64 JVM 1.5 (and 1.6) + relative gtk eclipse sdk 3.2.2.
In no circumstances I have managed to get the JSP editor to work, by following all the relative instructions (-Dlinux.experimental=true, ..HOME=””, etc.). In the best cases a message is shown with a link to follow to set an environment variable to disable the embedded browser in order to circumvent an eclipse bug, but if I do it, when opening a JSP page eclipse fails with a generic error message. Looking at .metadata/.log It seems to complain about a missing mozilla swt library.
I am afraid complete Linux support is necessary for me to consider using myeclipse; having to use Windoze would be a major set back.
Please, could you help?June 5, 2007 at 9:14 am #271140
Riyad KallaMemberWe have not had a chance to test with FC 7 yet, but I know that FC by default installs GCJ as the default Java runtime, and you need to use the Sun JDK from http://java.sun.com to run MyEclipse successfully.
Also MyEclipse is not compatible with either the 64-bit JDK builds or the 64-bit Eclipse builds, so you will need to use the 32-bit builds of each to get MyEclipse working.
Can you go to MyEclipse > Installatin Summary > Installation Details and paste that information here for me to look at?

Thank you for your reply, FC6 or FC7 or any other distribution should not make a great deal of difference, indeed I do not use fedora native java, only Sun JVMs
I tried a fresh install on an Intel 32 bit (Xeon) box.
Please, find below the complete log (workspace/.metadata/.log)

Riyad KallaMemberFor the time being can you right click on the files you want to edit and go to Open With > MyEclipse HTML (or) JSP Editor
this will be the source-only editor for these files types and shouldn’t cause this exception to occur. In the mean time we will look into this.

I am afraid this is not what I expected. Without a full functional visual editor, MyEclipse is of little use to me.

Riyad KallaMemberI’m sorry for the inconvenience. We have some more polishing of the visual designer on Linux to get it stable (as you noticed with the -experimental flag).
If you need to request a refund you can email subscriptions@genuitec.com and describe your situation to them. They should have no problem refunding your purchase to you. I hope when we get the design situation improved on Linux we can win you back again as a customer.

Since it’s time for me to renew and I like MyEclipse, I wonder, and I like to know from you, if you consider MyEclipse mainly a product for the Windows platform, with other platforms in a subordinate position. Thank you
July 5, 2007 at 9:44 am #272375
Riyad KallaMemberrde,
MyEclipse is not tied to a specific platform. In the early days we had something like a 95% “Windows” purchasing base of our paying users, back then I would say it was more likely, but now the mix is more like 80/15/5 (Win/Linux/Mac) so tying the IDE to Windows alienates a large number of our paying user base and that’s not something we can do.It’s true that we’ve had some technical hickups with some features on platforms… those are just honest to god PIA technical issues that spring up and when it gets down the wire and management has to decide between “We get this 1 feature working on <PLATFORM>, or finish adding those 4 new features on all platforms” the hellish library-conflict and threading issues get pushed onto the back burner so they stop blocking a release.

Renato Degli EspostiMemberThanks Riyad,
I understand this. That[80/15/5 (Win/Linux/Mac)] ‘s why, I guess, the above feature is experimental for linux for the last two major releases at least.
Anyway let me say MyEclipse is a good product with a reasonable commercial policy, so I think I just need to wait 🙂July 9, 2007 at 1:43 pm #272487

rde,

With my disappointment the long awaited JSP/JSF editor still fails to work. I reckon that we should deserve at least to be told when this issue will be fixed once and for all for Linux users.
July 9, 2007 at 3:44 pm #272494
Riyad KallaMemberGuys I’m sorry I don’t have more details for you, if you want a direct line to management (in addition to the noise I cause for them) you can email subscriptions@genuitec.com with requests to know when the issue will be resolved.
Please keep in mind they are good people it’s just tricky trying to balance all the factors that are required to keep a business going, keeping users happy, business happy, employees happy, etc. So a friendly reminder as opposed to an all out rant would likely be taken pretty seriously.

Renato Degli EspostiMemberWell, to complete honestly the thread, I have to say MyEclipse 6 is great. Even if linux features are still declared experimental, all things seems to work well. Wow !!!

Riyad KallaMemberThanks rde, it’s always nice to hear when the tool helps someone.
