    Hi,
Most of the time I work with multiple projects at the same time on MyEclipse. I have MyEclipse 3.8.1.
Every time I create a new project, I need to enter my user subscription information for “MyEclipse” ❗ . Is there a way to specify the subscriber information once for my desktop or the installation? ❓

    Thanks,
    Sanjay

    Sanjay,

Actually, it’s not every time you create a new project, it’s every time you create a new workspace. Eclipse is set up so that one workspace can hold any number of projects and you can control their visibility by closing them or placing filters on the various Eclipse views. However, I’ll assume you already know that and simply like to have lots of workspaces for additional organization.

The subscription key is stored as a preference and you lose it just like *all* your preference settings because Eclipse does not provide any global mechanisms for maintaining state across workbenches. As a result, we all have to go reinput all our preference settings when we create a new workspace. The subscription key is just one such setting. To make this easier, however, Eclipse does provide a preference export/import mechansim that will duplicate all your preferences, subscription key included. You can get to it at Window > Preferences > Export… at the bottom of the window. Once you export your desired preference set, you can quickly import them into each new workspace.

    Hi Scott,

This does not seem to be the whole story however. I have run into the licensing behaviour whereby if one Eclipse is up your license manager squawks that there are insufficient licenses when a second Eclipse access MyEclipse operations. I have not complained about this (and nor is this a complaint;-) because I rather understand the hard place you folks are in at $29/year. On multi-user platforms you simply can not afford to allow many users to share one license. On the otherhand, I work on half a dozen computers on our network and sometime I have mutliple copies of Eclispe up on any given computer as well as different machines. It would take rather sofisticate licensing manager for MyEclipse to cope with that and still not give away the store.

I figure I just get to grin and bear it 😉

    Joel,

Yeah, it sounds like you understand what we’re up against. 🙂 Of course installing on each of the machines you work on isn’t an issue and you can run on any of them, but only one at a time with a single user key, for obvious reasons. We did our best to come up with as flexible of a model as we could, knowing how developers work. In fact, there aren’t many software companies that even thell you it’s OK for you to personally use the same license on each of the machines you personally control. For example, you can run on your desktop at work, your laptop, and your machine at home and not violate our license agreement. But really, at $29, we have to draw a line somewhere. 🙂

Of course, depending on the inconvenience level of shutting down other instances you might want to consider a 2 or 3 user group key for your personal use. That should easily work with your normal multiple-machine / multipel instance work pattern. Call it the *pro* version, if you like. 😉

My company just ran into this problem. We have a client server project with two workspaces, one for the client and one for the server. We set these up using two workspaces instead of one, because they use different jdks. Now, we have a 3 user group key, but each developer usually has both workspaces open, so we are getting the subscription error. Is this a bug? or are you only allowed to use one workspace at a time? My feeling is that we should be able to open up as many workspaces as we want on one machine. Having to switch workspaces causes a lot of lost time, and inconvenience.

    Clint,

Please send an email to subscriptions@genuitec.com and let them know what’s up and they should be able to take care of you quickly.

Joel, same for you too, of course. 🙂
