napgsMemberRunning on RedHat Ent 4.
Everything working splendidly this morning until…
Prompt for QuickUpdate to MyEclipse 6.0 GA and subsequent install goes smoothly, but upon restart the app hangs trying to load my existing workspace. Will only allow me to work by creating a completely new workspace. Not acceptable.
Uninstall of ME 6.0 goes fine, but problem now persists in trying to start Europa Eclipse normally. GTK errors on console, and the app hangs. After several attempts to diagnose the problem finally reach the conclusion that I have to reinstall everything from scratch because I can’t get around the hang problem.
Uninstall Europa.
Download Europa and MyEclipse 6.0 GA linux bin installer.
Install Europa. It works. Load some plugins I need (Subversive, CDT, EPIC, etc.) Test. Everything works great.
Installation for ME 6.0 GA goes smoothly, but upon first start-up MyEclipse hangs on a blank “welcome” screen and a fubar’ed pull-down menu that has a weird code in place of the MyEclipse label.
Uninstall goes smoothly. But then when trying to restart Europa Eclipse (even with the -clean flag), I get a bunch of GTK error messages again and a ugly gray box instead of the splash screen.
Figured out that GTK error problem. Uninstall of ME doesn’t restore eclipse.ini.backup -> eclipse.ini. Doing this manually, no more GTK errors and Europa starts normally.
But still the problem of ME hanging after install.
Help? Explanation? Fix?

Well that’s a good start, it means at the worst, a fresh reinstall should fix the issue…

First thing that pops into my head is to shut down, edit the shortcut used to launch MyEclipse, and add -clean to it as outlined here:
https://www.genuitec.com/forums/topic/troubleshoot-using-the-clean-command-line-argument/Installation for ME 6.0 GA goes smoothly, but upon first start-up MyEclipse hangs on a blank “welcome” screen and a fubar’ed pull-down menu that has a weird code in place of the MyEclipse label.
The dorked welcome screen isn’t normal, but the place-holder for the MyEclipse menu is a known issue, using -clean above should fix it. There is some weird platform cache that gets invalidated when you add other plugins that dorks that menu label for some reason (just that single menu label though, nothing else)
Allen, just to make sure, what is the full name of the Eclipse download you are using? (the file name). Also what JDK are you using to run the Eclipse/MyEclipse setup? What is the full output of -version for that install?

eclipse-java-europa-linux-gtk.tar.gz

java version “1.5.0_12”
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_12-b04)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.5.0_12-b04, mixed mode)September 5, 2007 at 4:23 pm #275118
Riyad KallaMemberAllen,
We had this hick-up with 1 other person, you need to use the ‘Classic’ Eclipse SDK download, and not any of the specialized downloads. Here’s a link:
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops/R-3.3-200706251500/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-3.3-linux-gtk.tar.gzAfter you have unzipped that, you can go to Help > Software Updates > Manage Configuration, and right-click and add the MyEclipse dir as an extension and restart, and you should be all set.

napgsMemberOK, not exactly sure how to interpret your intent about using Manage Configuration because I’m not sure how you install Europa and MyEclipse separately then point the former at the latter. Anyway I didn’t have MyEclipse installed, so here’s what I did:
Got ‘Classic’ Eclipse. Unzipped into my existing eclipse dir. Started it to ensure it ran. No problems.
Installed the MyEclipse 6.0 GA download for Linux. Install went fine.
First startup, the program hangs on the welcome screen. Have to use a force quit to kill it.
Second start-up I execute by running Eclipse with the -clean flag. Program starts, loads my existing workspace, then freezes. Only have access to Linux window bar at the top, so reduce the window and wait to see if it’ll just take awhile to come around. Five minutes later maximize window again and it can’t even re-draw the Eclipse GUI. Have to force quit out of program again.
Various attempts trying different methods of starting all result in similar freeze and having to force quit each time.
On at least one positive note the MyEclipse menu label appears normal now when the program first starts.
Uninstalled MyEclipse so that at least Europa works on its own now.
Any other suggestions?

napgsMemberI’ve isolated the problem.
My development group has Java projects that require the IvyDE plugin from Jayasoft if you are working on them in Eclipse. If you attempt to load a workspace with a project that is already open and uses the IvyDE plugin, it freezes. I’m not certain what precisely the plugin is trying to do when the freeze occurs, but it never manages to resolve the library dependencies it is responsible for tracking.
If you start with the project that uses IvyDE as closed and then open it AFTER you’ve started MyEclipse, it works fine. Exit and attempt to restart without closing the project, and you’re back to a freeze situation again because the project is open again at startup.
This is really distressing. We rely on this plugin a lot, and we have a MyEclipse full subscription.
For the record, this problem did NOT occur with the MyEclipse 6.0 pre-release (M1?). I’m not sure what changed between that and the GA release.
I’m not sure what else I can do at this point other than go back to an earlier version of Eclipse/MyEclipse where the problem didn’t happen.

Riyad KallaMemberAllen,
I’m not sure what the conflict is occuring between MyEclipse and IvyDE. I have made a developer note to have someone on our dev team look into the incompatibility.September 28, 2007 at 9:23 am #276244
