Hi – we are very new to MyEclipse and we just purchased multiple licenses. I need detailed step by step instructions for (a) creating CMP beans (b) adding/modifying CMP fields and CMRs (c) packaging and deploying to JBoss4 or WebLogic8.

CMP fields and CMRs will be added/modified at different times by different people on the team.

Assume a low IQ and capability level – so please specify instructions at a true idiot level. Please respond soon … folks here are confused between JBossIDE, Lomboz, all sorts of other options.

Many regards … Milind Gadre (mgadre@adx.com)

    Milind,
Let me discuss this with the team.

In the mean time to clarify things better for you:

    1) JBossIDE seems to be a JBoss/EJB specific plugin for Eclipse that helps with development of the aformentioned technologies via XDoclet. MyEclipse actually integrated their previous release, so alot of what they had is already in MyEclipse. Their new release I hear has some polished Wizards, which can be nice.

    2) Lomboz is an open source Web development plugin for Eclipse, I can’t assess the quality of it because I haven’t used it that much.

    3) WTP, this is the web tools project that has been seeded by donations from IBM. It might be a while before it starts pulling together and making major headway, but the initial contributions show a lot of promise. The editors IMO were the strongest feature here, so MyEclipse integrated all the editors from the WTP project and spent months (and we continue to) fixes numerous bugs and performance problems with the donated code.

    4) MyEclipse is sort of an umbrella over all of this, including the best features from all these plugins (I don’t think Lomboz though) and adding more RAD tooling and functionality in addition to that; tying it all together in a cohesive environment where you have all the tools you need available to you.

I must clarify that we don’t simply *glue* a bunch of plugins together, the majority of MyEclipse contains tools and functionality that have never existed in other plugins before, and the plugins we do integrate we maintain, extend and optimize sometimes more than is available from the original authors. We do always try and work in cooperation with teams though, we are not fans of reinventing the wheel if it can be avoided.

I hope that information has helped, and we encourage you to evaluate all the products out there so you can make an educated decision for your team (assuming you had time to do so 😉

Thanks – I do need those step-by-step instructions to get going on the CMP beans portion. We are in the process of standardizing on a single IDE and then deploying to a server of the day. MyEclipse meets that need. But – I do need some help getting started.

    Thanks again … Milind

    Milind,
I have contacted the portion of the team that would be in-the-know on this topic, they will try and get back to you ASAP. In the mean time I would suggest you start here with our XDoclet tutorial: http://www.myeclipseide.com/images/tutorials/XDoclet_Example.html and then make a leeway into our Entity Bean tutorial here: http://www.myeclipseide.com/ContentExpress-display-ceid-51.html

You can also read our JBoss/XDoclet tutorial here as well: http://www.laliluna.de/tutorial/simpleEJB/xDoclet_jboss_first_EJB.html

This should get you comforatable enough with how the tool works that you can start banging out some EJBs in no time 😉

Riyad – I suggest developing a tutorial along the lines of the following (http://www.tusc.com.au/tutorial/html/index.html).

Databases and app servers used to be simple – before the J2EE committees took over. There are now so many hidden tools, configs, xml tags, descriptors, etc etc, that it is worse than Microsoft. Over-simplifying is better than making the assumption that people know the meaning of every term used.

    Thanks again … Milind

    Milind,

We certainly recognize the need for greatly improved and expanded documentation for MyEclipse. In fact, it’s the top delivery item for the 3.8.3 release since teams like yours certainly need help getting started on such a large toolset. Unfortunately, we’ve been adding features so quickly that the documentation needs a complete overhaul and we’re actively working on it right now. In the meantime, the references that Riyad pointed you to are the best place to get information on getting started at this point. I apologize in advance that we don’t have a tutorial explicitly ready for your needs, but we do appreciate your feedback and will do our best to include such information in our upcoming documentation rewrite.
