Knut Erik BallestadMemberI have also tried to start up ME with more memory this way:
C:\Java\eclipse\eclipse3M9\eclipse.exe C:\Java\eclipse\eclipse3M8\eclipse.exe -nosplash -vmargs -Xms256m -Xmx384mI have 640MB of physical memory, running WinXpPro.
Info from Eclipse log file:

Scott AndersonParticipantkeb,
Eclipse 3.0 does require substantially more memory than 2.1. Other than the log file, what do you notice when these problems occur?

Riyad KallaMemberkeb,
In addition to what Scott mentioned, if you follow the Eclipse 3.0 newsgroups or mailing lists, “OutOfMemoryExceptions” seem to be a hot topic with 3.0. I’ve heard a suggestion that Eclipse runs best when given an mx value of 512 and ms of 256 atleast… seems a bit steep to me, but that is just some of the suggestions I’ve been seeing.June 8, 2004 at 8:55 am #208153
John MyersMemberAt home I use 3.8B-1 on Mac OS X and haven’t had to change any memory settings, however at work I run WinXP with 3.8B-1 and with default settings on the sun 1.4.2 jvm it crawls. At work I have to run -Xmx384m to get decent results. I have 1GB RAM on both machines. I also run RC1/B-1 on an old 500MHz mac laptop with 384MB RAM and it is usable, albeit slower.
Does anyone have reports of performance on Linux?
Sidenote: what’s the difference between RC1 and M9, they’re different downloads. Speed seems the same.

You’ll also have to note that Mac OS X is a ‘real’ operating system with a ‘real’ memory manager. 😉

Many many bug fixes. M9 was a bit of a mess in places (the PDE being one of them).

Riyad KallaMemberDoes anyone have reports of performance on Linux?
The same it has always been, terrible.
On a scale from 1 > 10 Windows performance is a 10, Mac performance is around a 7 or 8 after all the improvements, and Linux performance is around a 4 or a 5. While some of this is SWT’s fault for not being smarter about drawing on Linux, a lot of it has to do with the lack of support on Linux for turning off drawing for a series of commands, and then turning it back on it see the end result. For example, switching perspectives on Windows and I believe Mac, will turn off drawing, do all the work, then turn drawing back on to show you the result of the switch. On linux you actually see the new perspective paint itself widget by widget.
SWT blames GTK for this, GTK blames XFree for this and XFree doesn’t seem to care. Hopefully with improvements in X.org and SWT is going to try and workaround this limitation internally we should be in better shape for other 3.x releases. Back when M2-3 was out, UI responsiveness on Linux (https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=37683) was top priority, but then crunch time came in and it got pushed to “future release”… so who knows.
