I am a relative noob w.r.t. Web development (15 years of C++), so forgive the noobness of this question. I have Tomcat 5.5.9 up and running on my laptop (no external servers here). I cannot start up and shut down the server from Eclipse (3.1, fwiw; latest MyEclipseIDE plugin). Wouldn’t I need certain privileges to do that? If tomcat is running as root, do I need to be root when I’m in Eclipse, so that I can then shut down Tomcat? I assume that the solution would be, start up Tomcat not from root (I may have to edit my /etc/inittab here), but as tnassar (as the case may be).

Once I can do that, how do I connect to a debug server to debug a JSP? I get the message, “Can’t connect to JVM.” What is that? What is the port number for Tomcat’s debug server, anyway? Is it 8000 (the default in the MyEclipseIDE wizard).

I assume that the problem here is that only root has write access to the directories that would be needed during startup:

SEVERE: The scratchDir you specified: /usr/jakarta/work/Catalina/localhost/host-manager is unusable.
    Aug 26, 2005 11:01:26 AM org.apache.jasper.EmbeddedServletOptions <init>
SEVERE: The scratchDir you specified: /usr/jakarta/work/Catalina/localhost/manager is unusable.
    Aug 26, 2005 11:01:26 AM org.apache.jasper.EmbeddedServletOptions <init>
SEVERE: The scratchDir you specified: /usr/jakarta/work/Catalina/localhost/admin is unusable.

SEVERE: The scratchDir you specified: /usr/jakarta/work/Catalina/localhost/_ is unusable.

    …and so on.

You are correct, I really suggest installing Tomcat, Eclispe and MYEclipse all as the same user to avoid any silly hassles and just be able to work without any hitches. If you decide you want to get fancy with permissions and what not down the road, that’s fine, but for the time being so you can work effectively keeping them installed all as one user (under your home dir preferably) is the way to go.

I will do that. It’s a little laptop I use to play with Linux; there’s really no need for any user but me anyway.

Will this solve my debug problems, though?

Tomcat 5.5 supports JSP debugging quite nicely, just make sure to be using JDK 1.4+ (preferablly 1.4.2_09 or 1.5.0_04, latest stables) to run Eclipse and Tomcat for the best result.
