I checked up on this issue. Here’s the status:
1) the team has been trying to replicate problem. They assume it is related to copy/paste operations based on your report. They have been trying different scenarios off and on but have failed to replicate the exact issue.
2) the NPE exception was isolated and fixed thanks to the data you provided. This fix will enable the file you provided to load in the upcoming 1.4.2 release
A bit more info on this issue. We were able to replicate the problem as you defined and a copy/paste fix has been released into code stream for the 1.4.2 release this coming friday. Thanks for your assistance.

Your file should open in 1.4.2. But it might need some tweaking. I have not looked at it yet to understand the full outcome.
