These are special instructions for using the MyEclipse update site to upgrade from MyEclipse 3.8.0 or 3.8.1 to 3.8.2. If you have a release of MyEclipse prior to 3.8.0 GA installed, please do not use the update site. Instead, use one of the downloadable platform-specific installers or the manual installation distribution. The update site is specifically built for upgrading only from 3.8.0 or 3.8.1 to 3.8.2.

The reason we’re providing a unique update site rather than using our default one is that we needed you to read and follow these specific instructions to work around a couple of bugs in the Eclipse 3.0 platform update mechanism, specifically (Eclipse Bugs #70783/70176/72653).
If you do not follow these instructions, you run a serious risk that the update will not be configured properly.

    Here are the update steps:

First, you need to specify the update site manually by navigating to
Help > Software Updates… > “Search for new updates to install” > “New Remote Site…”
Enter a name you like (ie. MyEclipse 3.8.2 Update Site) with a URL of
    http://www.myeclipseide.com/products/eworkbench/updates-3.8.2 and select “OK”
Check the new update site entry that is created and once Eclipse queries it and refreshes, select Next.
On the next wizard panel, select the line for MyEclipse 3.8.2 and select Next.
On the next wizard panel, select the terms of the license agreement and select Next.
On the final panel select Finish and then Install when you’re advised that the feature is not signed.

Once the installation completes, you’ll be presented with a dialog asking you if you want to restart.
    If you’re using Eclipse 3.0 (not 3.0.1)
    Select *No*.
Once the dialog closes, immediately exit Eclipse.
In order to work around the Eclipse update bug referenced above, you now need to start Eclipse with the
-clean option. You can do this by modifying the alias you normally use to start Eclipse and passing it the commandline argument -clean. An example for a default Windows installation is shown below:
    Code:

    “C:\Program Files\eclipse-3.0\eclipse\eclipse.exe” -clean

If you are using Eclipse 3.0.1 (not 3.0)
Select *Yes* and let the workbench restart normally since the bugs mentioned above have been addressed in 3.0.1.

    For both cases
When Eclipse restarts, MyEclipse 3.8.2 will be successfully installed. You can verify its presence by selecting Help > About Eclipse and then clicking on the MyEclipse icon to display the features installed.

If for some reason you let Eclipse 3.0 restart itself rather than selecting “No” as instructed, simply exit the workbench, delete the log file at <workspace-location>/.metadata/.log and restart with
the -clean option to correct the installation.

We apologize for not being able to use our normal update site, but testing of it proved that these steps were needed in order to work around the Eclipse 3.0 update bugs and ensure a proper installation.

Many thanks to Riyad for helping with this question in another thread: http://www.myeclipseide.com/PNphpBB2+file-viewtopic-t-4116.html
I have added a PS to the final step, so at least here the ‘receipt’ should be complete. Victor

    Hi,

this is what I did to update from 3.8.1qf3 to 3.8.2 using the .zip download for manual install, and I’d like to hear the procedure confirmed or corrected:
    – closed all projects
    – saved configuration (paranoia)
    – disabled ME extension
    – restarted eclipse
    – stopped eclipse
    – renamed the 3.8.1 ME directory and put 3.8.2 directory in place
    – started eclipse
    – enabled the ME extension
    – restarted eclipse PS: Choose ‘NO’ in the ‘Restart?’ dialog box and restart manually with ‘-clean’ parameter to trigger config files cleanup.

Is this the procedure to follow for updating from .zip file download? Could not find any posts about that and I’d appreciate any comments or suggestions.

    Thanks in advance,
    Victor

I am receiving the following when attempting to connect to the upgrade site:
    Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access /products/eworkbench/updates-3.8.2/ on this server.

I get 2 connection timeouts when attempting to connect to download the update. One for the URL mentioned above and one for that URL + site.xml. When I enter the URL via the browser, I get the “You don’t have permission to access /products/eworkbench/updates-3.8.2/ on this server” message.

    Any assistance appreciated.

    Jon,

When I enter the URL via the browser,

You can’t enter it via a browser and have it work. The URL is for the Eclipse update mechanism and it uses that as a base URL to look for well-known files, like site.xml. You don’t have permission to simply browse the root, but it works fine through the Eclipse update mechanism.

Using the update mechanism is ok, but my development machine does not have an Internet connection (company policy).

So how do I d/l the update and apply it? The steps posted by vict0r seem needlessly complicated. I should just be able to d/l the update, expand it into some temp directory, point the Eclipse updater at that directory and let it work.

Yes, and you can. An archived version of the update site is available in the product downloads directory.

I was running Eclipse 3.0 and MyEclipseIDE 3.8.1 and wanted to upgrade. So, first, I upgraded Eclipse to 3.0.1 to avoid the bugs as described above. Then, following the instructions above, I upgraded to MyEclipse 3.8.2. All seemed to go well, and it Eclipse restarted fine. However, now if I try to create a new html or jsp using File -> New -> HTML, I get this error:
! The selected wizard could not be started. Reason: Plug-in com.genuitec.eclipse.wizards was unable to load class com.aston.wizards.html.NewHtmlCreationWizard.

    Any ideas?

I’d still restart Eclipse with the -clean option as described to ensure that the install cache is rebuilt.

Yes, that seems to have fixed it. Thanks

    Hi,

In order to use jdk 1.5.0 I update eclipse from 3.0.1 to 3.1M4. After installed eclipse 3.1M4, MyEclipse3.8.3 did not work any more.

I can create web application and compile them using jdk 5. But I can’t deploy it to servers. The toolbar/popup menu just disappear.

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Jonathan,

Information on when we’ll support Eclipse 3.1 milestone builds is in this thread:
