Hello,

I tried to upgrade to MyEclipse 7 using the “Find New Features” to install within Eclipse.

After re-starting MyEclipse (and re-starting the machine when the first problems happened), I got the “7” splash screen, but then a simple little text dialog saying that “an error has occurred.”

This error log is about 500KB and has information in it like that below.

The path in the shortcut is:

“C:\Users\Mork\AppData\Local\MyEclipse 6.5\eclipse\eclipse.exe” -vm “C:\Users\Mork\AppData\Local\MyEclipse 6.5\jre\bin\javaw.exe”

javaw.exe is in this directory.

Can anyone please tell me how to fix this issue? It seems that every time I upgrade, I have one issue or another.

I have the same problem. I upgraded from 6.6 to 7.0 and I get this error. Even when I don’t use the shortcut and I start from eclipse.exe I get the error.

This seems to be an area that’s underdocumented ==>>> how to actually install each new release. I hope they fix this documentation issue.

For me, I just un-installed version 6.5x, then did a fresh download and install of version 7.

Seems OK now.

There’s also a new option button on the installer page: “Update Site” or something like that. I’m not sure what that does either…

Sigh….

At least, MyEclipse is a great product. I can live with this frustration between major releases.

I hope Ryad or one of the others responds to this thread so we know what they think too.

Hey guys,

Riyad should be back soon to weigh in but I wanted to try to clear up some things.

MyEclipse 6.5/6.6 is built on top of Eclipse 3.3.2 and WTP 2.0.3. You can’t upgrade that platform to MYEclipse 7.0 since it requires Eclipse3.4.1 and WTP 3.0.2. Also the structure of MyEclipse 7.0 is very different since it is built on top of Pulse technology (p2 replacement).

So the best thing for you to do is download MyEclipse 7.0 installer from the website (it will install in new folders) and when it comes up then point it at your existing 6.5/6.6 workspace.

If you don’t want to use the double-click installer because you want a hybrid environment (other eclipse based products) then you can take Eclipse 3.4.1 Classic (SDK) and install MyEclipse 7.0 into that using the ArchivedUpdateSite download.

Hope this clears some things up.

I don’t disagree at all. We have not done a very good job of explaining the requirements for installing MyEclipse 7, namely that it requires Eclipse 3.4.1 SDK as the base if you are going to be installing it through the archived update site. I will mention to the website/documentation team that we need to make things more clear.
As far as making the MyEclipse 7.0 available through Find and Install, we did not try to lock down our features/plugins to specific versions because that starts to introduce many other problems that users are much more likely to run into. So we sorta left this door open for someone to run into this. Hopefully better documentation will prevent others from the same confusion. Thanks for you feedback guys.

Your not having clear installation instructions….somewhere….is a bit hard to understand.

You have a great product; I’ve been using it for years.

However, you come out with a major new version and you don’t have a HUGE LINK saying “Installation Instructions”???

Come on.

Clear installation/upgrade instructions should be in every possible location where you can download the plug-in or anywhere you discuss it.

Please make this much-needed usability enhancement for your users.

I’ve spent many hours getting things to work (again) because of these missing instructions. Many of my MyEclipse “upgrades” have failed just because it was not clear how to do them.

If you have two ways your product “could” be updated, but one of them will not work (as with the Find New Features with version 7), you’ll just upset users and waste their time (needlessly).
