I have just upgraded from Eclipse 2.1/MyEclipse2.6 to Eclipse 3.0.1/MyEclipse 3.8.4 (but still have parallel copies running.)

I have seen numerous references to upgrading your workspace when going from Eclipse 2.1 to 3.0.1, but can’ tell what is the best way to do this. I started to just import each of my projects into Eclipse 3.0.1, but did not want to loose all of my settings. So, I just pointed Eclipse 3.0.1 to my old workspace (I have been using a separate directory for my workspace, not the directory under Eclipse 2.1.) I did get an initial error saying a couple of MyEclipse plugins could not be referenced. I closed Eclipse 3.0.1 and started again, and it came up without any errors.

I have looked at all of my projects and settings in 3.0.1 and everything looks fine.

I guess my question is… Do you see any problem with upgrading my workspace by just pointing a newer version of Eclipse to the workspace the older version was using?

    thanks,
    Jason

    Jason,
I wouldn’t suggest this but glad it worked, to make the best of it I would suggest shutting down ME and adding the “-clean” command line argument to the shortcut you use to start it, then fire it back up. This will allow it remove all the old stale plugin cache data and rebuild it.

How would you recommend getting the workspace (Projects and preferences) I was using in 2.1 over to 3.0.1?

    Thanks for the help.

Importing, like you said you were originally doing. I only say this because of how big a different Eclipse 2 to 3 was, like trying to upgrade a Windows 98 machine to Windows XP… while it technically might work, I would encourage people to do it.

I will probably import as you say. I am working on some upgrade procedures for customers and want to come up with the most error free upgrade route. Thanks for the great support!
