SteffNMemberHello,
I’m wondering why It’s not possible to buy a “normal” license of MyEclipse Enterprise. My employer (a relatively big U.S. company in entertainment business) has unfortunatelly decided to not to buy a bunch of MyEclipse licenses because of it’s license type. Is there a “normal” license without such a membership and annual subscription available? Neither in the FAQ nor in the subscription details information about this topic can be found. Just by once get the software for all the time…
For my own I will buy such a membership but have a additional question about it:
Is the “Individual Membership” a annual subscription for the Enterprise MyEclipse IDE or is it just a subscription for the support, forum, aso…? I need JBoss-Integration, DBExplorer aso…Would be great if you can make your license policies more clear. I’m sure this would increase your sell rates…
PS: My company is currently trying out other products because of their license model… But I would be more happy if they would try out (and buy) MyEclipseIDE… 🙂
Thank you a lot.
Regards

MyEclipse licensing is the most liberal license model in the industry. It is the only license that allows installing MyEclipse on more than one machine, allows transfer of license when employees leave the company and will go clearly go out of our ways to make sure our customers are never left without access to the software.
As for not having a perpetual model, many of the principles behind the product were simply fed up with companies selling software that cost an arm and a leg, only to ask you to pay again with every new release. Many would not even support you unless you buy the new product and support. The principles decided to simplify the MyEclipse license into an annual subscription. You pay one fee and you get everything. No hidden fees or up-selling agendas. You pay the annual membership and get access to all releases and updates. Our support model is un-paralleled in the industry. Many customers will attest to promptness, professionalism and sincere support provided on these forums. This support is also included in the MyEclipse annual membership at no additional cost.
The principles behind MyEclipse also wanted to make sure that complacency never set in by forcing us to compete with ourselves, and to constantly aspire to keep our customers. As you have already concluded, our membership removes the shackles (real and hidden) found in other licensing models. You are not bound in any way to stay with MyEclipse. You can simply walk away at the end of your membership and find something else. It is up to us to provide enough value, through new features and exemplary support, to keep you interested in continuing with us.
I wanted to clarify a possible confusing about the MyEclipse license model. Groups are provided a single license key to be used by everyone in the group. You will also be provided a master account at the MyEclipse site to manage your account, to request additional license and to renew membership as needed. You will not need to provide us the names of the end users. You can assign and re-assign the access key to your development team. Many of our customers with hundreds and in some cases thousands of developers find this process very convenient.
In conclusion, you should use the software that fits your development needs not because it seems easy for the purchasing group 🙂 We will not try to pressure our customers nor denigrate our competitors. Please don’t hesitate to contact me personally at the subscription department if you have any questions or if we can help in any way.
Best Regards
Jim K.

wayneModeratorI would be interested in learning more about how the MyEclipse license model was a negative factor in your organization. MyEclipse has quitely become the leading J2EE Eclipse add-on and our subscription model has been well received because everyone wins with this model. Is the issue with developers or management with the business model?
Here are some points to consider:
1) Analysts have openly stated that the subscription model is “THE” business model most likely to succeed commoditization really takes hold. I heard this first hand in a business track at EclipseCon and it was validated as a serious business model by Borland’s VP and several others large software tool companies.
2) If ME were to offer a perpetutal license what level of pricing would you be willing to pay? Most of our corporate decision makers have been very happy with the subscription model due to its low cost and predictable qualities. We believe the benefits of a subscription model are far better for our customers as you can easily opt out with minimal cost. This fact incents us to continually invest and enhance in MyEclipse. I believe this fact will be borne out over the next 6 months as you see many new very advanced features emerge. Opting out of other programs is much more difficult with the high dollar initial investment and follow on maintenance fees required for most other dev tools. We recognize that some developers have an issue with subscriptions because of the paradigm shift until they think through the benefits.
3) MyEclipse has quitely become the leading J2EE Eclipse add-on. We were the 1st in this market and have been pioneering how to develop and market Eclipse products. We know the costs for developing, maintaining, and marketing a product. Consider the track record of Eclipse-based alternatives to MyEclipse. Our competitors, for example, have been searching for a business model and changed their product base multiple times in the last 6 months. Each time it looks like a more desparate manuever that can not be sustained without experiencing severe financial loss. So if you plan to purchase an alternative product consider how long the business model you buy into will be in effect. It will typically be a very short period for any struggling company that is resorting to desperate “give away the farm” tactics.
