Every few seconds MyEclipse CPU usage spikes to 20 or 30% and stays there for a few seconds. While the CPU usage is high anything entered at the keyboard is queued up and spurts out when the CPU usage drops again. It’s quite maddening and makes working with this a bit difficult.

This just started happening a few days ago. I started using MyEclipse a few months ago and up until recently everything seemed to work fine. I have searched the forums for anything similar but came up empty. None of my colleagues experience this either.

I have tried everything including rebooting and restarting MyEclipse. I shut down virtually all apps and yet the problem persists.

Any ideas out there?

Sorry that you are seeing this issue.

Can you please share some more details to help us investigate further ?

1. Please share the Build ID from Help > About. Also share the OS and its version details (32 bit/64 bit version)

2. Did you install any third party plugins or make any changes to the IDE recently that you can recollect ?

3. Are you seeing the issue only when working with editors ?

4. Can you please try increasing the memory settings as suggested in this thread and see how it works ? :

5. If the issue persists, please switch to a new workspace, replicate the issue and copy paste the contents of the .log file which is located at <workspace dir>/.metadata/.log for us to take a look.

Hi again,

Here’s the info you requested:

(1) “Please share the Build ID from Help > About. Also share the OS and its version details”
Version: 10.7.1
Build id: 10.7.1-20130201
OS is Windows 7 64-bit with all the latest updates.

(2) “Did you install any third party plugins…”
I loaded a bunch of things when I was getting started (2 or 3 months ago) but nothing since then. Pretty main-stream stuff (Maven integration Struts support, etc). I can provide a detailed list if required.

(3) “Are you seeing the issue only when working with editors ? ”
I’m not sure I understand the question. The issue happens while I’m editing Java code, so I suppose the answer is “yes”.

(4) “Can you please try increasing the memory settings…”
I have changed MyEclipse.ini to contain the following, however, after I restarted MyEclipse the problem persists:
-Xmx1024m
-XX:MaxPermSize=384m

When I created a new workspace and added a Java file, the problem does not occur. Editing files is smooth and responsive. What’s odd is that when I return to the problematic workspace, things work much better. There is a slight delay when typing but not the 2 or 3 second pause that I was experiencing before. I have no explanation for this.

I’ll monitor the situation and report back if anything changes again. Thanks for your help so far. Hopefully the problem will not come back (I’m not optimistic… computers are just weird that way)

The typing delay/CPU spike problem came back, as I expected.

The problem only occurs in my main workspace, not in the new one that I created per your instructions.

It’s quite maddening actually. Today the problem re-appeared, and I had to ignore it just to get my job done. It’s very difficult to type effectively when whatever you enter splats out on the screen every 3 or so seconds. Also, at some point MyEclipse just stopped responding, turned all pale the way Windows likes to indicate a non-responsive app, and had to be killed from the task manager, taking a bunch of my work with it.

I have attached the log file. There are a bunch of exceptions in there, but I have no idea if that is what’s causing the problem.

Any help you guys can offer would be greatly appreciated. My boss thinks I’m an idiot for not getting this fixed. He may be right.

Sorry that you are seeing issues.

1. Are you on a very large workspace ? If you have heavy and unnecessary projects opened in your workspace, please close them.

2. Did you install a 32 bit or 64 bit MyEclipse version ?

The issue might be workspace related.

Can you please switch to the new workspace which exhibits no issues and import the projects from your problematic workspace and get working?
