I searched on AJDT in the MyEclipse Configuration Center on the Software tab.
It showed me the AspectJ Development Toolkit which I selected.
This put several items in my download list. When I tried to download these I just got a popup:
Software being installed: MyEclipse 8.6 (Profile) 2.0.0.0000000004 (com.poweredbypulse.profile-724639-rmb-623925 2.0.0.0000000004)

EVERY time I have tried to use this facility I have gotten this kind of incomprehensible nonsense that I have no clue what to do about.
I am using the MyEclipse all-in-one installation.
What do I do about this?

support-joyMemberflawlor,
Sorry to hear you are running into this issue. When you tried to add the AJDT plugin, it tried to add the plugin but encountered a server response timeout issue. Can you retry at another time or you can also try using pulse as an alternate approach. Here are the steps –
1. Open Pulse
2. Login to pulse
3. SElect “Eclipse Galileo” realm from top left hand corner
4. Select “MyEclipse 8.6” from “My Profiles”
5. Select software tab from the right hand pane and proceed to add the AJDT plugin and follow the wizard till completion
6. When prompted , please choose to restart the IDE,Let me know how this works for you
March 21, 2011 at 9:10 am #315369I constantly have problems with timeouts. It is not unusual for me to have to retry half a dozen times.
This should not be this way.
When it does connect I have a very high datarate, so badwidth is not the issue.
If it is going to do this, why is there no way for me to tell it to keep retrying more?
It sits there doing nothing for a minute or more before retrying. It then takes a couple of minutes to clean up. When I retry, it takes minutes more to get back to the file download.
I don’t have time for this.
I don’t have probmems downloading files from other sites.
It seems like there are real issues with how PULSE operates.

March 21, 2011 at 9:22 am #315370Do you mean I should go to poweredbypulse.com?
I don’t see anything about “Eclipse Galileo” realm or any “My Profiles”

support-joyMemberFrank,
Yes, if you have installed MyEclipse, please check for pulse here (Start > Programs > Pulse > Pulse Explorer or you can also download the same from http://www.poweredbypulse.com). Pulse would open multiple connections; in-turn results in a faster download of the software. For your time-out issue can you do the following, look into your .log file located at [your workspace dir]/.metadata/.log and look for relevant issues and copy and paste the same here. Also, are you behind firewall / proxy? If yes, can you please check your proxy configurations here – window > preferences > general > network connections?
March 23, 2011 at 10:44 am #315451Pulse Explorer: When I get into this it shows no profile (lower left). If I look at the “popular profiles” I can drag MyEclipse 8.6 into the profiles list. It now shows the typical list of available software, but also says “this profile is not installed”. When I click to install it, it puts up a message saying that a profile with this name is already installed and it won’t install it. Sheesh!
What is this supposed to do that the Configuration Center in MyEclipse doesn’t?
If I give it a different name (MyEclipse 8.6b) it starts to download all of MyEclipse 8.6! Not a “profile”.\
This facility is a confusing mess!Network Connections: yes I am behind a firewall. So what am I supposed to be checking for? The HTTP connection says to use the firewall. I would assume that if this was wrong I would not be able to download anrything, not just have retry problems with a few files.
March 23, 2011 at 11:05 am #315454I’ve noticed that the files which it has trouble with are large ones using the “large downloads strategy”.

support-joyMemberflawlor,
If you are behind fiewall, please ensure you have added your proxy settings in ME here – window > preferences > general > network connections. You mention http proxies. Please select the same and click on [Edit]. This would open an “Edit proxy entry” window. Please enter relevant details – host, port, if requires authentication enter the username and password, next click on [Apply] and [OK].
The reason I suggested pulse is you are running into a timeout issue while downloading required software. There could be a disconnect with the internet. Using pulse would result in faster downloads. Since you are behind firewall, you need to set pulse proxy. This is what you do – enable [Caps Lock] key and open pulse. This would prompt you to setup network proxies before continuing. Click on [Yes] and follow the wizard.
Let me know how this works for you.
April 5, 2011 at 10:51 am #315782I have the network connections set up.
If I take the URLs in the error messages and just frop them into the browser, the download does start but it can take a minute or two.
The problem seems to be that ME times out much faster than this.
How do I increase the ME timeout?
This is very frustrating that ME just retries a couple of times with a timeout which is far too short.
This is unusable. If I go directly to Pulse it has the issue with the profile name which I mentioned above.
You did not tell me how to address this.April 6, 2011 at 10:29 am #315823
Brian FernandesModeratorFrank,
If I take the URLs in the error messages and just frop them into the browser, the download does start but it can take a minute or two.
Just wanted to clarify this point – if you put this URL in a browser and press Enter, it takes a full two minutes for the download window to show up (or the download to actually start?)
As far as increasing the timeouts are concerned, you need to replace the following properties in your pulse2.properties file – find the existing properties and change to use these values or higher (unit is milliseconds)
com.genuitec.pulse.client.download.stall.timeout=120000 com.genuitec.pulse.client.download.time.before.switch=120000 com.genuitec.pulse.client.connect.time.before.switch=120000To locate your pulse2.properties file, look for the .pulse2.locator file in your home folder – this points to your Pulse installation. The pulse2.properties file is in the Common/configuration sub directory of that directory.
April 8, 2011 at 9:26 am #315892If my recollection is correct, it took a while before it put up the download window, but then everything was fast.
I made the properties updates and then attempted to download the google plugin.
This has always been a nasty one requiring many, many retries. It took a minute or so for it to start the bigger files, but then they went fast and it accomplished everything on the first try!
Thanks, that did the trick.
P.S. I’ve noticed many posts from others with download timeouts.
I suggest you raise the defaults (and improve the error messages).

Brian FernandesModeratorFrank,
Thanks for writing back in – I really am glad to know it worked.
A two minute timeout period is absurdly long, but perhaps required in some situations. As you suggested, I will be taking another look at timeout issues being reported and see if a change like this is warranted on a larger scale.
Thanks again.

Glen IhrigMemberHi Brian,
I agree that a 2 minute timeout is quite long, unless a given situation requires longer…
So rather than increasing the default timeout, how about informing the user that a timeout has occurred, and providing options, on that dialog, such as:
– Retry
– Retry with [x] minute timeout (user definable)
– Retry with no timeout
– CancelSeems this would give the user the flexibility to overcome these issues, without requiring support.
Regards,
-Glen
April 9, 2011 at 3:41 pm #315904I agree that 2 minutes is long, but it you don’t need it, it doesn’t matter how long it is.
I would just keep the user interface simple.
If a user doesn’t like the long time it is taking they can just cancel.April 25, 2011 at 4:26 am #316273
PeterSherwoodMemberHave to agree with the observations made here. Myeclipse in a plugin/update respect just isn’t out of the box enough. I should not have to install Pulse and I also shouldn’t have to tweek endless timeout settings.
When I compare it to IntelliJ where everything is simple and out of the box Myeclipse is light years behind. The update issues have been bad since version 7 and still haven’t been sorted. I’m tired of trying to sort them out and it could well mean that MyEclipse is no longer used.
How difficult can it be to have a proper timeout/pause mechanism?Overall I’m very disappointed that the timeout download issues are still present in version 9.
